DIY Facial

With most of the country shut down and people working remotely from home, it can be easy to start slacking off on self care. I say now is the best time to keep up with your skin care at home. Actually let's take it to the next level! Now is the best time to learn how to go above and beyond a basic skin care routine and start or perfect your own at home facial. I'm going to break down the steps to a basic facial, so that you can do it at home while still watching Netflix.

1.

Double Cleanse

Start with an oil cleanser to gently remove surface oils, make-up and sunscreen. Oil cleansers are great for all skin types. This will allow the regular cleanser to get deep into the pores without stripping the skin. I like to think of this as sweeping before you mop. Using dry hands on a dry face lightly massage the oil over your skin and then emulsify it off with warm water. Follow this with your second cleanser*. Choose one that is appropriate for your skin type.

*Silicone facial scrubbers or sonic facial brushes can be used during your second cleanse.

2.

Exfoliate

Now that your skin is thoroughly cleansed we can exfoliate those dead dull skin cells off. This will leave your skin smoother and brighter. Options for at home exfoliants range from scrubs, leave-on alpha and/or beta hydroxy acids, fruit enzymes all the way to mini chemical peels. Directions for this step will vary depending on the type you choose.

(If you are unsure about what would be best for your skin, please contact me (catecampbell@skinandax.net) and I will be more than happy to help you.)

3.

Mask

The first half of a facial is all about removal. Removal of dirt, debris and dead skin cells. The second half is now all about addition. Adding nutrients back into the skin starting with the mask. Choices for masks include creams, gels, clays/muds and sheet masks**. These can also be used together by multi-masking. Multi-masking allows you to target certain areas differently. For example someone with an oilier t-zone can use a clay or mud mask in that area while using a hydrating or anti-aging mask everywhere else.

*Jade rollers can be used over a sheet mask

4.

Finishing Products

Once the mask has been removed you can now layer your finishing products. These will include your toner, serum**, moisturizer, eye cream and SPF in that order.

*Jade rollers can be used over a serum
