Chemical Peels! Just kidding chemical peels aren’t scary or at least they shouldn’t be. I know most women immediately think of Samantha Jones in Sex and The City when they hear the term chemical peel. The episode that shows our girl in the aftermath of some ‘freshening up’, I’ll admit seeing it was frightening. Her skin was bright red and raw, who would want to go through that? Not me for one. That Sunday night on HBO scarred a generation of women. Making them to afraid of getting a peel themselves. So, let me take the scary out of chemical peels and explain the different types and what to expect when getting one.
Â
1.      Very Superficial Peels
Â
Does not penetrate beyond the top layer (Stratum Granulosum)
    Safe for home use
Great for treating acne, blackheads, fine lines and hyperpigmentation
This will keep your skin looking fresh and young
Fantastic to use as a prep for a future chemical peel
Â
2.      Superficial Peels Â
Â
Penetrate past the top layer to the Basal layer
This is the type of peel performed by most estheticians
       Little to no down time
Will only experience slight pinking of the skin and a few flakes
Perfect for those suffering from acne and/or seeing signs of aging
Â
3.      Medium Depth Peels
Â
Typically performed by in a medical setting
Penetrates the upper layers down to the Papillary Dermis
Able to treat superficial scars, sun damage and melasma
You will need to hide out inside for a few days
Expect lots of actual peeling 24-48 hours later
    * This is most likely what Samantha had done!
Â
4.      Deep Peels Â
Â
Performed only by a medical professional!
This peel will reach the Reticular Dermis
For severe scars, deep wrinkles and dark photoaging
You will be topically numbed and /or put under for this procedure
Expect to be wrapped up like a mummy and I would expect a new face!
